My research centers on the development and application of novel medical imaging techniques (mainly MRI) for the clinical and scientific investigation of the brain diseases and function. The goal is often to increase the sensitivity, scope and utility of these techniques. Because the broadest scientific and clinical impact arises from fundamental improvements, we try to work on novel approaches to sensitivity and encoding, including hardware and acquisition and systems level approaches. An important part of our efforts is to also facilitate the translation of these gains to benefits in clinical and scientific acquisitions. This often involves working directly with clinical faculty at MGH and industry and also with our licensing/ patenting office (as proper protection of IP facilitates dissemination and impact in some fields). Our lab also tries to maintain a balance of working on more speculative (“high-risk, high reward”) approaches. This has included new system-level approaches for portable MRI, applying Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) to the study of human brain function for the first time, and novel detection methods for contrast agents.
