Diversity Efforts Taking Place Within Biophysics

RECRUITMENT of a DIVERSE STUDENT BODY

The Biophysics Program has consistently been an active participant at recruitment conferences focused on under-represented and under-served students interested in STEM fields.  These conferences include the following meetings, where students can meet with representatives of the Biophysics Program and find out more about the nature of the research taking place in faculty laboratories, important requirements for applicants, and to make connections that help students navigate the graduate school application process:

The Society for Advancement of Chicanos/ Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS)

The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS)

The Equal Opportunity Publications (EOP) STEM Diversity Career Expo

The Biomedical Science Careers Program (BSCP) (taking place April 9th & 10th, 2021)

The New England Science Symposium (NESS) (taking place April 23rd & 24th, 2021)

The NIH Graduate & Professional School Fair (we will be participating on July 22, 2021, from 12:00-3:00 pm EST)

The Biophysics program participates in all HILS-wide information sessions, as well as organizes multiple informal webinars throughout the year.

If you are interested in learning more about the program, please check out the attached flyer. To speak to a student or program representative about opportunities to attend an information session, please contact Emma Sydir (G3) or Michele Eva (Biophysics Program Administrator).

OUTREACH & MENTORSHIP for COLLEGE & HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Mentorship and Application Assistance Program for URM College Students

Launched in the Fall of 2020, this program paired 10+ current Biophysics students with 30 URM undergraduates for one-on-one mentorship and assistance with applications for summer internships and graduate programs in STEM fields.

If you are interested in participating as a mentor or a mentee, please contact Irina Shlosman (G3 Biophysics)

FINDING SUPPORT, MAINTAINING SUCCESS & WELL-BEING as a GRADUATE STUDENT in the BIOPHYSICS PROGRAM

Peer Mentorship Program for Current Students

This informal program assigns incoming and junior Biophysics students to upperclassmen students with similar research or extracurricular interests.

If you are interested in participating as a mentor or a mentee, please contact Michele Eva (Biophysics Program Administrator)

Please also see the Biophysics "Health & Wellness" Page for helpful information and links to support systems in place for current students from academic and career decision-making to physical and mental health.
