Hugo aims to elucidate the mechanisms by which SMC proteins (cohesin and condensin) shape the 3D genome. He studies chromosome organization in organisms ranging from bacteria to humans; he combines genomics, imaging and computational/theoretical modeling to uncover the fundamental principles of genome folding.
