**Dissertation Title:** Principles of Chromosome Loop Formation by Cohesin and Condensin Protein Complexes **PhD Dissertation Advisor(s):** Dr. Leonid A. Mirny and Dr. Anders Hansen, Institute for Medical Engineering in Science, MIT In his dissertation research, Hugo aimed to elucidate the mechanisms by which SMC proteins (cohesin and condensin) shape the 3D genome. He studied chromosome organization in organisms ranging from bacteria to humans; he combined genomics, imaging and computational/theoretical modeling to uncover the fundamental principles of genome folding.
